Bitmap, vector ...
Every picture or photo you see consists of dots (small squares), which are also known as pixels. This can be clearly seen when enlarging a bitmap image. If these dots are stored on computer then this is called a bitmap, such as the GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PICT, and PCX formats. The greater the number of dots (pixels) per square cm (known as the DPI value) the better the quality of the image, although processing is then slower and more laborious.
The drawback of a bitmap image, if it has a low DPI value, is that its individual pixels will become visible when the image is enlarged.
Everyone wants to work quickly on the Internet; image files are kept as small as possible. If you print them out, they usually have a blocky appearance.
Types of digital pictures which can be enlarged are vector graphics or line drawings (such as WMF, EPS, CDR, CAD files). These vector graphics contain nodes and are stored geometrically (the nodes appear as though connected by elastic).
CAD (Computer-aided design) drawing applications and programs like Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw make use of these vector drawings. However far you enlarge them or zoom them in, they maintain their smooth lines and do not become blocky. They also have characteristics which a bitmap does not have.
A vector graphic is particularly suitable for sketches and cliparts which are scanned (as bitmap) and then converted into a vector format. (Photos are less suitable for vector images).
BMP (bitmap)
BMP cliparts are suitable for all Windows software applications which work with bitmaps such as word-processors and PowerPoint, etc. They are easy to use; for instance, they can be dragged into your word-processing application. You can even make alterations to them using the Paint graphics program or a photo-editing application.
WMF (vector)
WMF cliparts are vector drawings, to be used in Windows programs which work with vector images such as CorelDraw, Illustrator and Paintpro.
These drawing applications can be used to change colours quickly and easily as well as to perform various other functions these programs have. A major advantage of DMS Clipart drawings is that they can be combined with one another and are all of the same quality.
EPS (vector)
EPS cliparts are for professional usage for both Mac/Apple as well as Windows graphics programs and are royalty free, to be used for commercial purposes. It is not permitted to make any of the cliparts available for download or distribute them via CD, DVD or any other digital form.
If you are not sure which cliparts you can use, always download the free collection of BMP, WMF, and EPS cliparts first. These can then be tested in the software programs you use the most. You could also print them out to judge the quality of the cliparts for yourself.
